1- First meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence was held on 13th May, 2015 at 5:00 pm in the Committee Room No. 1, Parliament House, Islamabad with one point agenda to elect the Chairman of the Committee.

2- Following members of the Committee attended the meeting:-

2. Senator Ata-Ur-Rehman
3. Senator Col. (R) Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi
4. Senator Lt. Gen. (R) Salahuddin Tirmizi
5. Senator Lt. Gen. (R) Abdul Qayyum
6. Senator Muhammad Javed Abbasi
7. Senator Sehar Kamran
8. Senator Brig. (R) John Kenneth Williams

3- The meeting started with recitation from the Holy Quran by Senator Ata-Ur-Rehman. Addl. Secretary (Committees) briefed that the meeting was summoned for election of the Chairperson of the Committee from amongst its members, as defined under Rule 175 (1) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate 2012. Senator Col. (R) Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi proposed the name of Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, while Senator Hidayat ullah seconded him for the Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence. As no other candidate competed for the post, therefore, Addl. Secretary (Committees) announced unopposed election of Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed as Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence.  All Honourable members of the Committee congratulated Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed and wished him success.  They also  appreciated the wisdom, commitment and patriotism of the Chair.  The Chair thanked the members & reiterated that this Committee would act as a Bridge between the Military Establishment & the Parliament of Pakistan.  He appreciated the valiant role being played by the armed forces in fighting terrorism.  

4- Paying tribute to the Chair.  Senator Sehar Kamran appreciated the hard work done by the Chairman in bringing together the Military & Civil administrations.  She presented a resolution before the Committee condemning the tragic and unfortunate incident of killing of innocent people in Karachi.

5- The Senate Standing Committee on Defence unanimously adopted the resolution and very strongly condemned the tragic and unfortunate incidence of killing of innocent people in Karachi and expressed its grief and sorrow to the affected families (copy enclosed).  The Committee whole heartedly supported our valiant soldiers and the command of Pakistan Army who are fighting against enemies of Pakistan. Rich tribute and homage was paid to all martyrs and the resolve of standing firm for the defence of our beloved country Pakistan was reaffirmed.

6- The Chairman of the Committee fixed 27th May, 2015 as the date for the first in-house meeting of the Committee to devise work plan June 2015 - January 2016 of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence.
