Pakistan wants a peaceful Afghanistan: Secretary Defence

October 31, 2013

RAWALPINDI, Oct 29 (APP): Pakistan wants good relations with neighbours and desires a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, which is in the interest of the region, said Secretary Defence Lt Gen (retd) Asif Yasin Malik on Tuesday.  “Pakistan has rendered sacrifices in the war against terror, which need to be acknowledged by the international community at large,”  he said while talking to the United Kingdom (UK) Defence Committee delegation, which called on him here.

The eight-member delegation led by James Arbuthnot, Member of House of Commons, was received by Secretary Defence, Additional Secretary Defence and other senior officials.

James Arbuthnot said that the United Kingdom fully realized sacrifices rendered by the armed forces and the people of Pakistan.

“We want a stable Afghanistan so that Pakistan also enjoys a peaceful region post 2014,” he added.

The Secretary Defence said,”Pakistan as a member of Commonwealth attaches great importance to its deep rooted relations with the UK.”

“We have bilateral ties in many areas and further areas of cooperation have to be worked out”, James Arbuthnot added.

Both Pakistan and the UK found it a great opportunity to sit across the table to discuss important issues between the two countries and also the emerging dynamics of the region, he added.

He said Pakistan and the UK shared values and had a commonality of perception on many regional and global issues.

The meeting ended with hope that international community would realize the importance of the region in coming years.
