Chairman Standing Committee: Senator Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Javed Ashraf

Senator Javed Ashraf, affiliated with the PML (Q), was the Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production for the duration 2009 to 2012. He is a retired Army official who holds an M.Sc. degree in War Studies and another M.Sc. in Strategic Studies. The Senator has received a Hilal-i-Imtiaz on account of meritorious services for the Nation, as well as being acknowledged twice with the Sitara-i-Basalat for the display of exceptional leadership and valor during peace time.

Over the years Senator Javed Ashraf has taken up the following positions:

• Director General Military Intelligence 1990-91.
• Master General of Ordinance 1991-1992.
• Director General Inter-Services Intelligence 1993-95.
• Corps Commander Gujranwala 1995-1996.
• Federal Secretary Science and Technology 1996-97.
• Secretary and Chairman Pakistan Railways 1999-2000.
• Federal Minister for Communications and Railways 2000-2002.

Chairman Standing Committee: Senator Nisar Memon


Mr. Nisar Memon was the chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production for the duration 2006 to 2009. Earlier, he has also been the chairman of Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting (2004) and served as the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting in 1993 and 2002. He was the Chief Executive of the IBM from 1989 to 1999, and the President of the American Business Council of Pakistan in 1992. He was also the President of the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce & Industry Pakistan in 1994; and as a Chairman Board of Directors, Engro Chemicals Limited, Pakistan (2001-2002). He was a Syndicate member of Karachi University and President of ‘The Reformers’, an NGO. Mr. Nisar Memon is married and has two daughters.
